What should you ask a halal meat supplier?

Ask for the halal certificate and its product scope first, then food safety certification, raw material origin, product specification, packaging and logistics. These six points cover most of what a buyer needs to compare suppliers fairly.

  • Certification scope: which products are covered, and by which certifying body.
  • Validity: the certificate period and renewal status.
  • Food safety: HACCP or an equivalent food safety management certification.
  • Raw material origin: documents for the origin of the main meat ingredient.
  • Product specification: ingredients, allergens, use-by date and storage conditions.
  • Logistics: cold-chain handling, order unit and delivery lead time.

Why does sourcing halal meat products need extra care?

Because trust in a halal product depends on the whole chain: raw material, slaughter and processing, and handling. A buyer needs documents that show the product meets halal requirements, not only the company.

Processed items such as meatballs make this even more important. Once meat is ground and mixed with seasonings, the only way to verify it is through documents and certification.

How is halal certification different from HACCP?

Halal certification confirms that ingredients and processing meet halal requirements. HACCP confirms that the manufacturer runs a system to identify and control food safety hazards. In Korea, HACCP certification is managed by the Korea Agency of HACCP Accreditation and Services. The two answer different questions, so a buyer should check both.

What should you check on Korean labels?

If you plan to sell in Korea, the product label must follow the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety's labelling standard. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, allergens are shown separately, and a use-by date (소비기한) replaced the sell-by date from 2023. For export, confirm which label languages and formats your market needs.
